Holiday Visits When Your Loved One is in Assisted Living

By CarePatrol of Mokena-Joliet

Assisted living communities typically allow family members to visit their loved ones at any time, and this does not change during the holidays. In fact, it is encouraged to have families come to holiday festivities with their loved ones to make it an enjoyable time for families and to participate and mingle in holiday cheer. This can take the pressure off of trying to plan a special meal or activity that revolves around the holiday.

The communities really pull out all the stops so that you can sit back, relax, and make memories with your loved one. This also is a great time to meet the residents and their families that your loved one sees around the community. Many times, they speak of a friend’s family member and this will allow for you to put a face to the name.

During the holidays, the communities will host holiday parties with special meals, games, visits from Santa and performances from area talent. The communities will typically allow for families to reserve a table so that their family can sit together and enjoy a holiday meal. The chef will prepare a few choices for you to select from. They know that this is a special event for the residents and their families so they will make sure it is something delicious.

I would suggest that family members request a copy of the community calendar early, so that they can go over it with the resident and plan out which activities they would like to participate in.

No matter what activities you choose, you are sure to have a good time engaging with the residents and their families. Nothing is more reassuring than seeing a smile on your loved one’s face. Celebrating the holidays in an Assisted Living community, can be fun for the whole family.
